Date Posted: March 26, 2008
Deadline for internal competition: April 16, 2008
Agency deadline for LOI (NOT required): May 19, 2008
Agency deadline for Full Proposal: June 17, 2008
Sponsor: National Institutes of Health (NIH), Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI)
Limit on number of proposals: The applicant institution may submit only one application in response to this funding opportunity. The medical school, engineering school, or dental school, etc., of a university, even if on different campuses, constitute a single institution. Therefore, KU-Lawrence and KUMC are considered one university for this initiative.
The NIBIB (National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering) solicits grant applications for recently established interdisciplinary research training programs that integrate the biomedical sciences with the physical sciences and/or engineering. It is anticipated that this will lead to an increase in the number of interdisciplinary researchers working at the intersection of these disciplines and a transformation of institutional programs to support interdisciplinary training. The total project period for an application submitted in response to this RFA may not exceed 5 years. Applicants may not request more than $500K in direct costs or more than 10 training slots for any grant year. Applicants are expected to have addressed and achieved the program objectives of the Phase I HHMI-NIBIB Interfaces Initiative program announcement (http://www.hhmi.org/grants/pdf/comp_annc/2005_nibib_program.pdf). Previous participation in Phase I is NOT required in order to apply to this RFA. Applications to this program should be significantly and substantively different than currently active federally funded research training grants (e.g., NIH T32 or NSF IGERT) already awarded to the applicant institution. Any real or apparent overlap with existing sources of support for interdisciplinary training should be addressed in the application.

If you are considering a pre-proposal, please contact RGS's training coordinator, John Augusto (jaugusto@ku.edu, 864-7351), to discuss this initiative as soon as possible. Also, I ask you to alert Barbara Earl (bearl@ku.edu, 864-7781) that you will be submitting a pre-proposal one week prior to the internal deadline. This information will assist RGS in organizing the review committee.
The pre-proposal should include (1) a three-page narrative (describing the proposed research, including key personnel and partnerships, addressing any special components requested in the agency's solicitation [p.3-Research Training Objectives; p.9-Other Special Eligibility Criteria; p.14-Special Requirements; p.19-Review and Selection Process], and a generalized yearly budget) and (2) a short vita for the PI and all co-investigators, including funding history and current and pending support. Investigators may include suggestions of faculty members whom they believe are especially well qualified to evaluate pre-proposals for this initiative. Please submit this material electronically to Barbara Earl, manager of Proposal Services, by 5 p.m. on April 16, 2008 (bearl@ku.edu, 864-7781).
If the number of pre-proposals exceeds the mandated limit, an internal review committee will be formed to review all pre-proposals (comprised of research administrators from KU-Lawrence and KUMC). The committee's intent is to select a proposer by April 28, 2008, thereby giving the proposer three weeks to prepare for the optional LOI submission, and an additional month for the proposal submission.
If you have any questions about the solicitation or the process described above, please contact Barbara Earl.
